Ribera del Duero Wine Tasting

Our next wine tasting focuses on the wines of Ribera del Duero in northern Spain. We will introduce some new arrivals from Bodegas y Viñedos Alto Sotillo, a true artisanal producer where even the winery is built by hand!

With top producers hitting prices of $1,000 a bottle, Ribera del Duero is home to some of Spain's most powerful and expensive red wines, primarily centered on the native Tempranillo grape.

Like its sister region Rioja, Ribera del Duero is historically influenced by Bordeaux wine styles. The signature blend of Tempranillo with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, subject to long barrel ageing, was pioneered by the famed Vega Sicilia estate in the 1880s.

Some producers follow this approach, while Alto Sotillo and others prefer pure Tempranillo. A few top quality cuvées blend Tempranillo with native red grapes or even a Côte-Rotie style blend with white Albillo grapes, the only permitted white grape in the region.

We will try a broad spectrum of these food-friendly wines, 13-14 high quality wines in total, including both organic and conventional labels. The tasting will feature principally Ribera del Duero reds, complemented by an eclectic selection of lighter whites and rosés.
